Miren Urrutia Iturritza

PhD student

Originally from the Basque Country, Miren moved to Edinburgh to carry out her undergraduate studies in Biotechnology and business studies.

About Miren Urrutia Iturritza

She then joined the master’s programme in Molecular techniques in Life Sciences, which allowed her to study at Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). During this time, Miren has worked on diverse projects, such as the study of epigenetic regulators in leukaemic cell lines, the development of brain organoids for the study of developmental syndromes and the establishment of an automated diagnostic point-of-care pipeline for infectious diseases. She is interested in applying molecular techniques in combination with computational analyses tools, which she will be employing in the lab to study host-parasite interactions of malaria in the liver.

Miren has lived in Stockholm for 4 years and during this time she has made a big effort to explore all that the city and Swedish culture has to offer. However, there are still many feats that she hasn’t accomplished yet. Her Swedish bucket list includes ice-skating on a frozen lake, hiking the Kungsleden trail, trying surströmming and attending as many ice-hockey games as possible!!
